BJP MLAs Confer with Himachal Governor; Senior Congress Leaders Hurry to Quell Crisis

In a dramatic turn of events in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP achieved a surprising victory by defeating Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi in the Rajya Sabha elections. Jairam Thakur, the Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh, along with BJP legislative party members, met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at the Raj Bhawan today, signaling a potential upheaval as the Congress government faced a significant setback.

“We have briefed the Governor about the events in the Assembly,” Thakur informed reporters following the meeting. “Our request for a division of votes during the financial bill was denied, and the House was adjourned twice. The conduct of the Marshals towards our MLAs was unacceptable.”

Jairam Thakur, the Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh, along with the BJP’s legislative party, convened with Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla.

Thakur voiced concerns about possible punitive measures against BJP legislators and Congress MLAs who supported the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls. “We are concerned that the Vidhan Sabha Speaker might suspend BJP MLAs and Congress MLAs who backed the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections,” Thakur stated. “It’s clear that the Congress government has lost its legitimacy to remain in power.”

The Himachal Pradesh assembly was adjourned for the day amid disruptions from both the treasury and opposition benches. Thakur accused the government of evading the division of votes due to its loss of majority.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu failed to maintain unity within the party during the Rajya Sabha elections, with six MLAs cross-voting, leading to an embarrassing defeat for the Congress.

With the Congress holding 40 out of 68 seats in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly and the BJP with 25, the six Congress MLAs voting for the BJP candidate have potentially paved the way for a no-trust motion.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge dispatched senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and D K Shivakumar to mitigate the crisis in the hill state, where the party returned to power in December 2022.

BJP MLA Vipin Singh Parmar, part of the delegation meeting the governor, criticized the Speaker’s conduct during Assembly sessions. “When a cut motion is proposed, it’s customary for a debate to follow, as it’s the opposition’s right,” Parmar remarked. “However, the opposition’s voices were suppressed, and when we approached the Speaker, we faced aggression.”
